For years, I have used surface
lures for both bream and bass fishing. Although there are a number of bass
surface lures on the market, the range for bream surface lures is limited
and as such, the available lures do not quite meet my needs. Therefore, I
designed the
Skywalker,
which incorporates all the important features of high performance bream
surface lure.
In order to use the
Skywalker,
I first tie the lure to my leader using a loop knot to ensure the best
possible action. There are two main ways to fish the lure. The first is to
cast the lure and slowly twitch it on the spot, to imitate a fallen insect.
The second technique is to use a slow wind with slight twitches of the rod
tip, which is also referred to as the ‘walking the dog’ technique. This
technique closely imitates an injured bait fish or frightened prawn.
There are three main reasons
that this lure hooks up better than any other surface lure I have used.
These are:
(1)
Hook position
- The hook is located towards the back of the lure
which is where the bream often target it’s
prey (ie- the lure);
(2)
Split ring
- The split ring allows the hook to be
changed more easily and it also means the hook hangs a bit
lower in the water. The advantage of the hook hanging lower, is that it
increases your hook-up rate and it catches the fish who might normally
strike short of your lure.
(3)
Hook size
- The hook size on this lure is larger than
other similar sized lures on the market. This means
the hook up rates are once again increased and the hook-ups are usually more
solid.
